Description

waddled to the water’s edge, plopped his little body in the water, and swam towards the family of geese. Yes, it's how things work in real life, people pick and laugh about you if you look differently, but not everyone and not always. I felt like you should have added a bit more where the used to be ugly duckling showed his family of ducks what he looks like now. And although ‘The Ugly Duckling’ ends happily, and with a far more conventional happy ending than Andersen’s fairy tales often have, it is actually not about acceptance.

The Ugly Duckling - DLTK-Teach The Story of The Ugly Duckling - DLTK-Teach

And when the ugly duckling catches sight of his own reflection in the water, he realises he is not an ugly duckling any more, but a beautiful, elegant swan.A farmer finds and carries the freezing little duckling home, but the foundling is frightened by the farmer’s noisy children and flees the house. He is the author of, among others, The Secret Library: A Book-Lovers’ Journey Through Curiosities of History and The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem. But as the days went on, the other ducklings started to pick on their brother, and everyone else in the farmyard got in on the act. This doesn’t make ‘The Ugly Duckling’ an unusual fairy tale by any means: it’s the equivalent of the poor orphan girl discovering she’s really the princess, or the kitchen boy discovering he’s heir to the throne. When winter arrives, a farmer finds and carries the freezing duckling home, but he is frightened by the farmer's noisy children and flees the house.

Alongside my learning, studying, and thinking about digital platforms and critical theory, I appreciate long conversations with close friends, reading poetry, and taking photos of my cat. The book contains 5 of Hans Christian Andersen’s most popular stories, all of which I have reviewed separately. I chuckled all through the beginning where the mother duck is waiting for her biggest egg to hatch, complaining that her layabout husband never comes to see her, another older duck advising her that it was a turkey's egg, and to leave it alone. If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. We are to presume (though Andersen’s story doesn’t state as much) that the ‘ugly duckling’ hatched from a swan’s egg that had accidentally ended up in the mother duck’s nest. The last of her baby birds to hatch is a larger bird than the other ducklings, and the other birds – and the other animals around on the farm – consider it to be ‘ugly’.
